Assess Your Needs

Finding temporary housing during your relocation can be a difficult task. Tight housing markets, whether you are moving to a big city or a smaller town, make finding interim lodging challenging. Vacancies, especially in housing markets such as San Francisco, Raleigh or New York, are few and prices are rising.

Before you investigate temporary housing options, understand your needs:
bullet

Length of time that you will need housing (on both the departure and destination ends)

bullet

Suitable locations (If you have school-aged children, you may need housing close to schools; if not, you may be more flexible in choosing locations.)

bullet

Price you are willing to pay for accommodations

bullet

Amenities you will need (furniture, kitchen items, linens, etc.)

bullet

Whether your relocation benefits (if you are being moved by your employer) include temporary housing, and what costs are covered

Here are some tips for finding the best temporary housing in a competitive market:
bullet

Look for new properties — they sometimes need to lease for cash flow and may be eager to work a deal with you

bullet

Consider many suburbs and neighborhoods — by reviewing multiple options, there's a better chance of finding a property that best suits your needs at the right price

bullet

Review various floor plans — to widen the types of properties available to you.

Types of Temporary Housing

A couple of different temporary housing options may be available to you, depending on the location and your budget.

Corporate Housing

Corporate housing properties come fully equipped with amenities to make you feel at home. Corporate housing is generally best for stays of one month or longer. Considerations:
bullet

Usually significantly less expensive than suite hotels

bullet

Range of properties, from apartments and town homes to single family dwellings

bullet

Most come furnished, with fully equipped kitchen, linens, television and VCR, etc.

bullet

No long-term leases or down payments necessary

bullet

No hidden fees or deposits

bullet

Pets can be accommodated at certain properties

bullet

Nationwide availability through Oakwood Corporate Housing

Suite Hotels

Suite hotels are also equipped with amenities but are generally best for stays of less than 30 day. Suite hotels are usually close to major thoroughfares and do not provide a residential living environment.

Considerations:

bullet

Usually more expensive than corporate housing

bullet

Maid service is usually part of package

bullet

Room service is available at some suite hotels

bullet

Many offer a complimentary continental breakfast or cocktail hour

bullet

Accommodations are smaller than a corporate apartment and usually do not include a full-size kitchen
